The building was originally constructed in 1850 by the pioneer John McKenna. In 1856 it operated as the licensed Fitzroy Hotel, continuing through the colourful gold rush years. The property was originally called Ros-my-lyn only to be renamed Garryowen at the death of John McKenna in 1883.
